The population of older adults is on the rise. Currently, there are 37 million individuals in the United States who are 65 years or older. By 2030, this population will grow to about 80 million. Aging is sometimes coupled with an increase in acute and chronic illness which can also affect psychosocial functioning. The leading causes of death in individuals ages 65 and older are the following: heart disease, cancer, and stroke. Other chronic conditions that can cause impairment include diabetes and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Many illnesses that are experienced by this population can be managed through the use of lifestyle and behavioral modifications. Lifestyle habits that can predict disability in older adults include smoking, diet, lack of exercise, and alcohol consumption.  Presented by Stacy Ogbeide, PsyD, ABPP, CSOWM, a Board-Certified Clinical Health Psychologist, a Board-Certified Specialist in Obesity and Weight Management (CSOWM) as well as an Associate Professor in the Department of Family & Community Medicine at UT Health San Antonio.
